Dulas (Corris)

Sunday 19th January

Nine of us met at 8am in the foggy car park at the Clubhouse with no river planned. After briefly consulting the river levels online the Dulas was decided upon and with Machynlleth in the Sat Navs we set off. To Bill's dismay Dobbie's was not en route however we we fortunate enough to stop at McDonalds in Newton for his caffeine fix. Here Adam C entertained us with stories of kayaking in Africa and his very convincing Nelson Mandela impression.

Once at the put-in the crystal blue hue of the river was extremely enticing, and following Adam C's demonstration of the first drop and the careful positioning of throw line bearers the rest of us ran the drop with style putting to bed some omens from the past.
The wonderful Alpine style Grade III water continued for a while until a tight slot which, after a briefing from the professional kayaker the group ran and demonstrated the advantages of rolling practice at the pool sessions. Mishaps were quickly sorted out thanks to the expert safety team.

More Grade III followed, a brief portage around a grade 5 via a must-make-eddy and what was described as a "pleasant" seal launch lead to the rest of the river.

There are some lovely sections of river here with one of these providing Doug with opportunity to show off his roll 4 times before him and Ali joined me in my "one-man-eddy" we then rafted up to avoid further capsizes to complete this section.

The river trip came to an end with sight of our shuttle bunny (Adam H) where after getting changed the obligatory group photo was taken and hip flask sipped from. The journey home was bisected by a visit to a "unique" pub which is unlikely to rate highly on Trip Advisor but provided a venue to tell tales and watch videos from the day on the river.
Thanks to Zaf, Jason, Ali ,Bill, Rob, Adam C, Adam H and Doug

PS: It turns out that the river level referred to at the clubhouse car park was actually for the wrong Dulas (there are several in Wales).
